Tring Park 2 v Cookham Dean Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 07 May 2011 at 1pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 8 runs
Match report
Cookham Dean 1sts began their Division 3B campaign with a classic encounter away to Tring Park 2nds, finally prevailing by 8 runs in the evening gloom.
New Dean skipper Ben Millar was pleased to be put in on a good pitch which nevertheless offered some assistance to the seam bowlers, but found the going tough against Tring seamers Wastling (3-56) and Devlin (2-32) before falling for 9. Opening partner Jon Stewart soon followed for 14, setting the stage for an excellent rebuilding effort by Tom Bibby (55) and Rory Millar (43). Faced with tight bowling and sharp fielding from the home side, the pair batted slowly at first before pushing the innings along after the halfway mark. The innings lost its momentum when both were dismissed in quick succession, although Tom Wells-Cole’s rapid 27 not out pushed the total up to a competitive 192 for 6.
Tring’s top 3 all fell before the score reached 30, with the Dean’s excellent fielding backing up Chris Nunn’s lively opening spell to great effect. Middle order bats Baker (52) and Taylor (45) batted well and looked set to guide Tring to victory before both were excellently caught by Rory Millar in the covers. A nip and tuck contest ensued, with aggressive hitting from Tring’s lower order countered by regular breakthroughs, most crucially from off-spinner Sav Gandesha who took 3 for 40.
Nevertheless, Tring were favourites to win with two wickets in hand and just nine needed, but the bowlers had the final say in a breathless finish. Gandesha bowled Curry, and from the very next ball bowled by Nunn (3-48), no. 10 bat Wastling succumbed to a nerveless catch in the deep by Aaron O'Donoghue, sparking joyful scenes as Cookham Dean savoured a memorable win.
