Kew 2 v Cookham Dean Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 03 Sep 2011 at 12.30pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 15 runs
Match report
Not satisfied with sealing promotion last week, Cookham Dean 1sts extended their run to seven wins out of seven completed matches in their last game of the season away to Kew 2nds.
Choosing to bat first, the Dean started brightly through skipper Ben Millar (20) and Tom Wells-Cole (17), but when they both fell a flurry of wickets at the hands of Kew paceman Simon Foster (6 for 53) left them reeling at five down with less than 100 on the board. Clive Lambden led the fightback for Cookham, returning to form with a crucial 53. All-rounder Chris Nunn chipped in with a dogged 31 not out, enabling his team to bat almost all of their overs and post a competitive 191 all out from 51.
Kew's innings started cagily, with Nunn and Richard Bibby bowling tightly with the new ball. David Boers (42), M Russell (33) and Kunal Kohli (39) all frustrated the visitors with patient knocks, but none were able to break the stranglehold created by Cookham's tight bowling and excellent fielding. Needing around 100 from last 16 overs with 7 wickets left, Kew attempted to accelerate knowing that only a win would guarantee their survival in division 3B. The part-time spin of Justin Rodgie proved to be their undoing, however, with the Australian taking 5 for 40 as a succession of Kew batsmen tried and failed to get after him. Rob Mettler (3 for 20) accounted for the Kew tail, the last wicket falling in dramatic fashion with just four balls to spare and Kew 16 runs short.
News of 25-point wins elsewhere for Wooburn Narks and Harefield 2nds soon filtered through, consigning the home side to a shock relegation to division 4B.
