Hawridge and Cholesbury v Cookham Dean Cricket Club Friendly 2nd XI on Sun 29 May 2011 at 2pm
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 1 run
Match report
Cookham Dean’s first Sunday 2nds game of the season was an absolute thriller as they picked up a one run win at Hawridge and Cholesbury in Paul Taylor’s first game as captain. Cookham batted first as Tom Wells-Cole (24) and Rob Mettler (43) got them off to a fine start putting on 62 for the first wicket in 13 overs. Their departures triggered something of a mini-collapse as Cookham were soon 87 for 3 and then 96 for 4. Oli Dandridge (36) and Michael James (23) steadied the ship with a partnership of 57 in only eight overs. They both got out in quick succession though as Cookham went from 153-4 to 180 all out with only John Gay (21) making double figures out of the lower order. 180 looked under par at the interval with most of Cookham’s batsmen having gifted their wickets away.
After an outstanding tea, the Dean went out to defend their total. Wells-Cole removed the impressive looking Hamblin for 15 and when Mettler had the dangerous Smith caught at square leg for 16, Hawridge were 52-2. Seth Munn removed Knight in his first over but Taylor (54) and Ralphs (37 not out) combined to guide their side slowly into contention. The return of Rob Mettler removed Taylor and Holdsworth (12) in quick succession as the game swung back in the favour of the visitors. Tom Bibby bowled the final over with Hawridge and Cholesbury needing 9 to win and with one ball remaining they needed 4. When Richardson played and missed it was controversially signalled as a wide meaning the hosts needed three, they could only muster a single however as Richardson was run out attempting a second.
