Match report
Cookham Dean narrowly missed out on a fourth consecutive league win on Saturday, in a thrilling game away at Finchampstead 3s.
Having been inserted to bat under grey skies, the visitors started well, with Dave Brooks hitting a quick 23. Tom Bibby (22) and Ben Millar put on 61 for the second wicket before Millar was well caught by Garteth Biggs for 45. The Finch spinners were able to slow the Cookham run-rate at this point, but Clive Lambden (28) and Imran Butt (39) ensured no further wickets went down after Bibby had become Mike Huggans second wicket. 27 from 19 balls from Christian Austin helped the Dean to accelerate, although the re-introduction of Mark Simmonite (3-40) ensured that they could not post more than 218-9 from 50 overs.
The Finch batsmen came flying out of the blocks, reaching seventy after nine overs, before Biggs (29) was run out by Tom Ansell, his partner, who then hit his next ball straight to mid-off. When Nathan Clarke was bowled by Pres Patel (2-40), the hosts had slumped from 80-0 to 82-3. Patel and Tom Rosenthal (2-50) bowled fantastically in the middle overs against a far more cautious Finch, with Rosenthal picking up dangerman Alan Jones leg before wicket.
With 69 required from the last 14 overs with five wickets remaining the spin of Imran Butt (4-42) was introduced, which proved successful as the batsmen looked to accelerate the run rate. However, they managed to keep close to the required run-rate, meaning eleven was required from the last over by the last pair. Despite the best efforts of youngster Dan Lincoln (34*) Finch fell eight runs short, although it could have been even better for Cookham, with a difficult catch going down in the gully off the third from kast ball.
However, Cookham still managed to pick up 15 points, enough to see them leapfrog Wooburn Narkovians into second place.
