Cookham Dean Cricket Club 1st XI v Hayes on Sat 06 Sep 2008 at 12.30pm
Match was Abandoned Rain

Match report Cookham Dean eventually secured promotion on Saturday after a remarkable last day of the season. With news filtering through that fourth placed Slough 3 had won the toss at bottom of the table Bagshot 2 and therefore given themselves an opportunity to claim 25 points by batting first, the Dean knew they required at least ten points to guarantee promotion. In truth, Cookham’s determination to bat first to attempt to reach the cruicial 200 mark before the rain arrived did themselves few favours, as they found themselves batting in farcical conditions after a two-hour rain delay. With the run-ups wet, Hayes’ spinners Michael Green (2-54) and Steve Cooper (5-65), making only his fourth appearance of the season, bowled throughout the innings after the first over. Their off-spin proved virtually unplayable on the muddy Cookham surface and the Dean slumped to 30-4. However, Imran Butt (33) and the recently recalled Paul Farnborough (28) put on a vital 37 for the fifth wicket before the former’s dismissal sparked another collapse. Two run outs didn’t help matters, as the Dean stuttered to 124-9, narrowly missing out on the 125 that would have meant an additional two important batting points.
Suddenly the unlikely outcome of finishing below Old Merchant Taylors, who were guaranteed twenty points as a result of the Chalfont St. Peter 2 strike, seemed possible, with the Dean needing to take four Hayes wickets to avoid that outcome. With the hugely impressive Cooper (56*) showing the class that had seen him make two unbeaten hundreds in three previous innings, Cookham were undoubtedly on the ropes. In order to finish above OMT, they required one more wicket from the final five overs with Hayes needing just 19 runs to win. At this point, the steady drizzle that had been falling for the past half-hour intensified to the point that further play was impossible. The abandonment, combined with the revelation that Bagshot had managed their first victory of the season over an under-strength Slough side, meant Cookham were promoted in their first season of Thames Valley League cricket, along with deserved champions Hayes.
Cookham could count themselves fortunate for this reprieve, especially as it emerged that Wooburn Narkovians had unexpectedly picked up the full 25 points at British Airways, meaning they would in fact have needed three more wickets to seal promotion, something that would have proved immensely difficult with Cooper looking imperious at one end. However, credit should also go to the spirit shown by the hosts in the field to contain the Middlesex side’s big-hitting batting line-up for almost 30 overs. Chris Nunn (2-39) was particularly impressive in his containing role.
