Match report
Cookham Winning Run Comes to an End
Cookham Dean Saturday 2nds were forced to settle for a draw against Hayes 2nds at Ricketts Field in their TVL 6A clash. Hayes won the toss and elected to bat on the best wicket seen at Coohkam so far this season. Borland and Bibby bowled well at the start but it was Farnborough who made the breakthrough as he had Painter caught behind for 9. Hayes skipper Jones batted well for his 67 but Cookham took wickets at regular intervals and looked to be firmly in charge of the game as they reduced the visitors to 190-8. Some wayward bowling and sloppy fielding from the home side followed however allowed Richardson (56 not out) and Toon (32 not out) to the imposing total of 273 for 8 from their 52 overs.
In the face of such a large chase, Cookham captain made the bold move in promoting regular lower order batsman Mike Cutting up to open. Cutting took up his rare opportunity at the top of the order in emphatic fashion as he smashed 55, his first league 50 for the club. Together with Freeman (28) he looked to limit the threat of pace bowler Sharma. Sharma eventually removed them both, however. Glover, struggling with an injury, was caught on the boundary for 0, a rare failure with the bat. Farnborough and Brar batted together for a while, although the chances of a victory for the home side were reducing rapidly. This was put beyond doubt as Brar, Bibby and Farnborough were dismissed in quick succession. Andrew Pett (22 not out) and Jonathan Gay (39) batted solidly and made sure that any chances of a defeat were unlikely as they saw off most of the bowling with little problem.
