Match report Cookham Dean defeated their President John Bowley’s team on Sunday in a well-contested match. The Presidents XI batted first, and with a strong looking batting line-up, the Dean sensed they may have a long afternoon in the field on one of the hottest days of the year. However, they fielded a strong side themselves, with Amit Patel, making a rare Sunday appearance, cleaning up first-class cricketer Muditha Fernando with the second ball of the match. This brought former North Maidenhead batsman Dave Terrington to the crease, and he showed glimpses of his ability in seeing off the new ball and hitting some classy shots, whilst ensuring he was still unbeaten going into lunch. This he managed, allowing him to attempt an onslaught in the Dean bowlers in the second session, but having survived a couple of regulation chances, he holed out to long-off for 47 off the bowling of Pres Patel (2-30). Clive Lambden, enjoying a rare bowl, bowled surprisingly economically, and Rory Millar claimed the prized wicket of Tom Mellor for just one, and accounted for the scratchy Tom Oldershaw (24). Dave Brooks turned his arm over for the club for the first time in the final five overs, but he proved expensive and his two over spell went for 23, allowing the Presidents XI to post 199. Simon Wilmore hit a good 40*.
Kevin Chappell (2-16) bowled both Tom Rosenthal and Patel at the top of an unusual looking Cookham Dean top order, as Cookham slumped to 45-5 in reply. However, they had positioned many of their usual top-order players lower down the order, and this showed as first Dave Brooks (34) and then Clive Lambden (32*) supported Imran Butt on his way to a brilliant 87. He was adjudged LBW to Tom Oldershaw, who otherwise went around the park, as did most of the bowlers. This left Ben Millar to finish the game, dispatching the third and fourth balls of Club Chairman Tony Austin’s spell to the mid-wicket boundary.
