Reading 3 v Cookham Dean Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 09 May 2009 at 13.30
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets
Match report
Cookham Dean cruised to a comfortable nine-wicket win against a weak Reading 3rds on Saturday. Playing in their first Division 3 game, Cookham lost the toss at Sonning Lane and were asked to field on what looked a very flat wicket. With opening bowler Nick Borland yet to arrive at the ground, it was left to Pres (3-37) and Amit Patel to open the bowling for the visitors. Helped by some poor batting, and good catching behind the wicket by keeper Dave Brooks and Sav Gandesha in the slips, the Patels quickly reduced Reading to 25-5. Scott Beaven (24) and skipper Atif Nasim (39*) led a spirited lower order revival, which gave their side brief hope of getting back into the game, but the reintroduction of the opening bowlers ensured Reading were bowled out for 141 in the 45th over. Amit Patel finished the pick of the bowlers, taking 5-40 from his 15 overs. Given their dreadful start, Reading could be happy to have something to bowl at, but it was never likely to be enough on what was a beautiful batting wicket and lightning fast outfield.
In reply, league debutant George Edlin made a rapid 83 not out from only 56 balls, as Cookham made light work of their target, knocking off the runs inside 23 overs. He was supported by Ben Millar (39*), as Reading’s lack of depth in the bowling department was exposed.
Dean will hope to build on their impressive start on Saturday, when they host Chalfont St. Peter, who also picked up twenty points in the opening round. Cookham will welcome back key players Clive Lambden and Imran Butt.
