Match report Cookham Dean's promotion hopes were ended at home to Thatcham Town 2s on Saturday, after disappointingly failing to claim the tenth wicket, despite having had nine overs to do so.

Cookham had been inserted by opposition skipper Rob Fraser, but this decision seemed to have backfired as Ben (45) and Rory Millar (17) added 54 for the second wicket to reach 66-1. However, Thatcham did a job in the field and maintained their discipline throughout, meaning the run rate was always kept under control. After the Millar brothers departed, only Clive Lambden (22) and Chris Nunn (27) made significant contributions as Simon Rider (3-31) and John Williams (6-37) ensured the Dean subsided to 153 all out, with Amit Patel caught off the final ball of the innings. Left-arm spinner Williams bowled particularly well, extracting sharp turn from the drying wicket throughout, having been handed the new ball.

153 looked below par, but marathon spells with the old ball from skipper Pres Patel (1-28) and Sav Gandesha (4-56) kept the visitors in check, with only Ian Cottingham (21) managing to score at anything like a healthy rate. Indeed, the hundred was not brought up until the 39th over, but by this time Chris Nunn (2-8 off 7 overs) had swung the match further in the Dean's direction with some canny operation. Fraser (21) briefly looked dangerous as he added some much needed impetus, but when the new ball was finally taken, Amit Patel removed the stalwart and Williams in quick succession to give Cookham 9 overs at the final pair. With a barbeque organised for the evening, a cock-a-hoop crowd had created a carnival atmosphere, but the Cookham bowlers were unable to hoover up the tail, despite an enormous appeal for a catch at short-leg off the bowling of Nick Borland in the final over.

With the strong possibility of five, or even six, sides being relegated from level 3 of the Thames Valley League, Cookham are still not guaranteed of safety, although a 32 point cushion over eighth place with four matches remaining should mean that only one more victory will not be sufficient. Cookham face league leaders Slough 2 on Saturday, who have lost four of their last six.
