Cookham Dean Cricket Club 1st XI v Chenies & Latimer on Sat 29 Aug 2009 at 12.30
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report Cookham Dean upset the form book with a three wicket victory over top of the table Chenies & Latimer on Saturday, helped by a generous declaration and determined batting display, which included a first Thames Valley League hundred for Ben Millar.

Chenies signalled their intentions by opting to bat first on a flat Cookham Dean wicket, and after Amit Patel made an early breakthrough, the much vaunted Geoffrey Isaacs immediately launched a savage assault on the Cookham bowlers, making 51 in just nine overs. However, after Pres Patel (3-54) removed the danger man just as he was threatening to take the game away from the hosts, the run rate was subdued somewhat, although Chris May (58) and Stuart Bowen (32) batted well to help their side to 257-9 declared from 45 overs. Sav Gandesha picked up late wickets as the visitors looked to set up a quick declaration, but it was a below-par effort from Cookham in the field, with the extras tally of 36 particularly disappointing.

After a slow start, Ben Millar (116*) was able to exploit the attacking fields with a flurry of boundaries off the usually reliable Dave Brown (4-90), and he was ably supported by Tom Bibby (24) and an agressive innings of 43 by Clive Lambden, as Cookham added 77 and 73 for the second and third wickets. Chris Nunn plundered three quick boundaries to ensure the required rate never approached a run a ball, but when he was trapped in front of his stumps Cookham seemed to be stuttering, at 176-4. However, with Rory Millar (19) playing an important supporting role to his brother in a run-a-ball partnership of 72, Cookham were cruising to victory as Chenies seemingly shifted their attention to arguing amongst themselves. However, three wickets fell inside four deliveries with the finish line in sight, meaning the game continued until the final over, but Millar settled any nerves by smashing an overpitched delivery down the ground for four, thereby guaranteeing Cookham's third division status for another season. Having put a dent in Chenies promotion push, they will hope to do the same to Royal Ascot this weekend in the final game of the season.
