Royal Ascot v Cookham Dean Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 05 Sep 2009 at 12.30
Cookham Dean Cricket Club Lost by 157 runs
Match report
A depleted Cookham Dean had a disappointing end to 2009, losing by 157 runs at Royal Ascot, who won promotion in the process. Ascot needed to adopt a bold approach to stand a realistic chance of catching Chenies, so unsurprisingly opted to bat first, and came out batting agressively. However, this approach did allow the visitors to pick up two early wickets through Amit Patel to leave Ascot 19-2. However, captain Nick Sweetman produced a fine innings of 134 from 122 balls. He was ably supported by Jack Kendall (30), Matthew Weston (23) and Gareth Baker (44), all of whom scored their runs at a healthy rate to allow the declaration to come after just 43 overs. Only the occasional off-spin of Rory Millar (2-17) had any kind of success in stemming the flow of runs.
Aussie overseas player Weston (5-37) effectively wrapped up victory and promotion for his side with an opening spell that saw the ball moving both ways at decent place. Cookham were at one point 13-4, and despite a fine counter-attacking knock by Chris Nunn (48) and determined brigadeer blocks by Rory Millar and Arun Brar, the final wicket was taken by Weston in the 42nd over with the Cookham total on just 116.
